Provides a guide to the features and typical characteristics of long-life extensible coatings intended for exterior or interior use on concrete and masonry, when applied by airless spray or roller in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Scope

This Standard provides a guide to the features and typical characteristics of long-life extensible coatings intended for exterior or interior use on concrete and masonry, when applied by airless spray or roller in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Paints covered by this Standard are classified as paint Type 38 of AS 2311 and correspond generally to Australian Paint Approval Scheme specification Type 2 of GPC-C-117.

Latex extensible wall coatings are generally referred to as membrane coatings. They are non-aggregate, flexible, watertight finishes which are applied to prevent the ingress of moisture and which will retain flexibility at varying temperatures, so accommodating expansion or contraction of the substrate. Extensible coatings also provide anti-carbonation resistance. These coatings are not intended for use on horizontal surfaces where water ponding is possible. They are normally specified in systems that may have a sealer and multiple coats.

Application of membrane coatings may be by airless spray, textured roller (low profile texture) or nap roller and typically would be at a spreading rate of 1.0-2.0 m2/L (1.0-0.5 L/m2) per coat. The total film thickness applied will be critical in achieving required levels of performance, particularly crack bridging where higher film thicknesses improves this property.

NOTES:
1 AS/NZS 4548.5 provides a test which may be used to check the cure of concrete and masonry surfaces before applying the sealer.
2 Appendix A provides guidance on the use of long-life coatings for concrete and masonry.
