This Standard specifies the classification, dimensions, quality and test methods for the hand-held mechanical pencils used for writing and draughting.

However, those attached to the machinery instruments such as a plotter are excluded.

NOTE: The International Standard corresponding to this Standard is as follows.

ISO 9177-1 : 1989 Mechanical pencils – Part 1 : Classification, dimensions, performance requirements and testing (MOD)

In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents between the relevant International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21.
