This Standard is applicable to the exchange of serial binary
\ndata signals and timing signals across the interface between Data
\nTerminal Equipment (DTE) and synchronous Data Circuit-terminating
\nEquipment (DCE). The DCE is considered to be synchronous if the
\ntiming signal circuits are required at the transmitting terminal or
\nthe receiving terminal, or both. The signal quality requirement is
\nlimited to synchronous transmission at the interface with
\nsynchronous DCEs. Signal quality pertaining to asynchronous DTEs is
\nnot part of this Standard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

TIA\/EIA-232-F TIA\/EIA-530-A together with TIA\/EIA-422-B
\nelectrical characteristics<\/p>\n
TIA\/EIA-687 together with TIA\/EIA-423-B electrical
\ncharacteristics\u00a0<\/p>\n
TIA\/EIA-723 together with TIA\/EIA-694 electrical
\ncharacteristics\u00a0<\/p>\n
This Standard specifies signal quality in relation to jitter,
\nduty cycle, and frequency accuracy of timing signals and time
\ndisplacement between data signals and timing signals. Electrical
\nspecifications for the signals are not part of this Standard but
\nare part of the reference interface specifications.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This Standard is of particular importance when the equipments in
\na system are furnished by different organizations. It does not
\nattempt to indicate what action, if any, is to be taken if the
\nlimits are not met, but it is intended to provide a basis for
\nagreement between the parties involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This Standard does not describe any requirements for error
\nperformance for either a complete system or any system components.
\nIt should not be assumed that compliance with this Standard will
\nproduce error rates that are acceptable in any particular
\napplication.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Any equipment which is represented as complying with this
\nStandard shall meet the applicable specifications within the range
\nof those factors which are described as appropriate for the normal
\noperation of the equipment, such as primary power voltage and
\nfrequency, ambient temperature, or humidity.\u00a0<\/p>\n
