ESDU 84039 gives methods for estimating the stresses in, deflections of, and ultimate load capacity of angle and club-foot fittings used to provide a tensile load path across a joint or through an intervening member. For even the simplest joint the complex behaviour under load, resulting from the interplay of stiffnesses of the various elements of the joint, is not amenable to accurate analysis. Accordingly, simplified models are provided that can be used to determine the major effects of the many factors that affect joint strength and deflection. Design criteria are discussed and possible failure modes for various parts of the joint are listed. The effect of the position of the bolt on deflection and stresses is analysed. A comparison is included of experimental results for failure loads of the bolt and the leg with predictions made using the simplified models proposed.
