By using an idealised joint model, the concept of a
\nload\/deflection diagram is developed to show the influence of
\npretensioning through to joint separation. That analysis is then
\nbuilt on to show how the load paths may be determined in a
\npractical joint, including the effects of prying apart when the
\nload is off-set from the fastener axis, dimensional tolerances on
\nsquareness and flatness of the components, fastener yielding, level
\nof pretension, and changes in materials properties with
\ntemperature. Guidance is included on estimating the stiffness
\ncontribution made by each component of the joint and, in
\nparticular, to assist in rapid calculation of the feet, graphs are
\nprovided. Factors governing the selection of fastener size,
\navoidance of separation, and fatigue loading of the fastener are
\nexplained. Sketches illustrate the influence of bolt size and
\nmaterial, hinge point position, washer and plate and foot
\nthicknesses, load, and other parameters on pretension values for
\nbolt yielding and joint separation. Two extensive practical worked
\nexamples illustrate the use of the methods. A program based on the
\nmethods presented, ESDUpac A8521, accompanies the Data Item. The
\nprogram treats any combination of material properties, washers of
\ndifferent design on either end of the bolt, plates between the feet
\nor layered over the feet and under the bolt head or nut, and
\nnon-standard features such as Belleville washers represented by
\ntheir stiffness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
